REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Explore Other Food SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Leah Pressey 4/21/2019 6:20 PMThe most interesting of the Drawdown ideas I researched was the multistrata agroforestry. I recently read a book entitled "The One Straw Revolution" written in the 1970s by a Japanese agriculturalist and farmer. He spoke a lot about the "Do Nothing" farming method which is all about letting nature do most of the work and disturbing the process as little as possible. He even identified that pruning trees caused increased disease and recommended against it with fruit crops, insisting that yields will be higher with less human intervention. Many of the Drawdown farming techniques are in full agreement with the concepts in "One Straw Revolution". -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Leah Pressey 4/13/2019 4:44 PMSince I don't live in or near a city, the turbines would work on the outskirts of town on a hill. We have large turbines north of Orangeville, and where I live in Amaranth, we could easily have a micro turbine on my property -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about Regenerative AgricultureClean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?
Leah Pressey 4/09/2019 5:31 PMWe need to drawdown the carbon in our atmosphere. Improving soil using green manures etc. does just that. We also need to improve our wasted soil as growing will become more difficult with climate change. -
Leah Pressey 4/07/2019 4:10 PMI didn't have time to complete my Regenerative Agriculture research as I got sidetracked looking for a source to by non GMO white clover seeds. I am planning on doing some green manure planting this spring. I will reach out to the farmers from the session from a couple of weeks ago, but hoped that someone here might have some ideas. -
Leah Pressey 4/05/2019 6:00 PMI am just starting my research on Regenerative agriculture and found "Regeneration Canada" ast https://regenerationcanada.org/en/about-us/. Very good site to get started! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Leah Pressey 4/05/2019 5:33 PMMy diet contains palm oil. I have learned that palm oil is responsible for about 50% of the rainforest deforestation. I have downloaded a list of palm oil derivatives and will use it to avoid palm oil as much as possible. I have also made contact with my local coffee supplier and requested that they sell rainforest certified coffee. -
Leah Pressey 4/04/2019 5:44 PMI started my research on how my diet contributes to deforestation and it didn't take long to see the issue with palm oil. The more I learn the more I cook at home from scratch!-
Danielle Jongkind 4/05/2019 5:31 AMI've found that cooking from scratch also decreases how much I eat. If I want cookies, I have to make them and sometimes I'm just too tired to bother! LOL -
Rose Schmidt 4/04/2019 7:05 PMI'm going to make sure my peanut butter is palm oil free by contacting the company. The label says yes, but company is not on a palm oil free list. I found an article that said palm oil is in some toothpaste, cosmetics, shampoo and soaps. So it's not just food.
