REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? Share some of the learning with your friends!
Robin Treadwell 4/24/2019 5:41 AMKatherine Wilkinson's TED talk really interesting. UNFPA data shows over 200 million women still lack safe, reliable contraception, therefore reducing their ability to care for families and selves, and contribute to communities. Need more support! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Explore Other Food SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Robin Treadwell 4/24/2019 5:36 AMNumerous initiatives to produce food in unfavourable situations eg. rice that grows in higher salinity water! Food production responsible for 25% of global GHG emissions, food waste for 8%, approx 1/3 of all food produced...horrors. In developed countries this is mainly after it reaches consumer, as opposed to before hand in developing countries; new technology being developed to lower this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?
Robin Treadwell 4/24/2019 5:27 AMSupporting women will support families, and especially young women in their communities to develop businesses and increase education. Research women owned businesses to give priority to supporting them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?
Robin Treadwell 4/24/2019 5:25 AMFascinating - wave generators already working in
Portugal, and tidal ones in France - need tidal range of 5m however.
Lots of R&D underway and trials in USA Pacific NW areas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Communicate With My Elected OfficialsWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Robin Treadwell 4/22/2019 5:32 PMUsing fossil fuels to generate electricity just adds to GHGas emissions and therefore the Climate Crisis - for the sake of endangered creatures, including humans, we all need to support clean alternatives and power down ie reduce our usage so we can use surplus for charging evs, running clean heating options eg heat pumps -
Robin Treadwell 4/21/2019 1:53 AMWhile over 60% of tertiary graduates are women, not so at the top. "In 2017, the Ministry of Education reported that only 26% of professors and deans at the eight universities were women. In 2012, the New Zealand Human Rights Commission’s census figures calculated that female professors constituted 19% of the total number of senior academics at this level." -
