Aimee Vincent 4/25/2019 9:47 AMThanks team-mates and organizers! I really enjoyed participating in the challenge and learning from the 'deeper dive' information in each of the categories. With "Bike-to-Work coming up (in May) incorporating more bike riding will be the next challenge I will be working on. Cheers all! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Purchase a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Aimee Vincent 4/23/2019 5:23 PMI purchased an 'Eco-Tourist' bundle from Terrapass - offsetting the annual amount of emissions I typically create from driving and airline flights. I've also cut back on frequent flying by having longer stays with family in fewer trips. -
Aimee Vincent 4/23/2019 2:51 PMI went out of town and wasn't able to track all of my challenges but I had a chance to talk with a skeptical family member about Climate Change and it was very congenial and productive. It reminded me that coming from a place of listening and openness can pave the way for greater understanding. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about Regenerative AgricultureClean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?
Aimee Vincent 4/11/2019 10:34 AMRe-building healthy soils, increased biodiversity and a net positive effect on climate by capturing carbon in soil and reducing fuel use (associated with industrial agriculture) are several other reasons to care about regenerative agriculture, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Aimee Vincent 4/11/2019 10:29 AMChecking to ensure that coffee, chocolate and other products are "Rainforest Certified" https://www.rainforest-alliance.org/articles/rainforest-alliance-certified-coffee -
Aimee Vincent 4/11/2019 10:26 AMOh wow- I have been aware of palm oil in food products and consciously avoiding products that contain it. I just learned how many other products also contain palm oil derivatives- especially cosmetics like shampoos, soaps, creams, etc. Now I am going to look for those ingredients and work to eliminate those products as well. The use of palm oil puts tremendous pressure on land use, driving rapid deforestation of rainforests - which results not only in lost biodiversity, but driving many species to extinction. For more information... https://www.rainforest-rescue.org/topics/palm-oil#start -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Aimee Vincent 4/05/2019 3:22 PMAll of these advantages are inspiring. And gardening is fun and healthy too! Today, I enjoyed a green drink sourced almost entirely from my community garden plot. :) -
