Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/22/2019 7:24 PMMy personal “why” story: my best friend in elementary school’s b-day is Earth Day and as a kid she wished every day was Earth Day so she could get a present everyday. I got older and realized maybe we SHOULD consider every day “Earth Day”. Every day we are so blessed and fortunate to receive the gifts from nature - from food to clothes and the air we breathe. When you see the benefits of nature , it is not hard to want to make a difference to our earth. This eco-challenge, too, has taught me that small, every day activities can make a difference. Checking in every day alone increases your awareness and that in itself can make a difference. -
Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/15/2019 8:40 AMMe: filling my single (and only) empty glass jar with beans and it overflowing.
Dad: you know, we’ve got a ton of glass jars in the basement.
Me: O_O It took me 2 weeks to get through this jar of marinara and now you tell me!
Just goes to show you zero waste takes time and commitment and a unified effort at home helps a lot, too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Social Justice Express My SupportHow could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?
Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/13/2019 10:27 PMEconomic growth is very important for a walkable city. You can improve sidewalks all you want but if there are no shops to go to or places to see/explore, there is no point. Unfortunately, online shopping has forced small businesses to close. The problem now is how to get ppl to go outside. -
Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/09/2019 7:26 PMI received an email from King County asking me to fill out a survey about how the metro bus is doing. If you take the bus like I do everyday and would like to partake, go to this blog post here: https://westseattleblog.com/2019/04/bus-survey-metro-asking-for-your-opinions/

Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/08/2019 6:53 PMDowntown Seattle has some seriously steep slopes. Luckily, a research team at UW has mapped out all the streets to tell us which ones are ADA accessible. See website here: https://accessmap.io/ -
Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/04/2019 8:16 PMIt turns out, the first step to eating zero waste food is to eat all the food you have in your fridge so you don’t waste anything. Have to complete this before going to the farmers market this weekend! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/03/2019 7:22 PMI think it has to do with the amount of meat we put in our meals. IMHO, Americans love to enjoy their large steaks and it is treated as a commodity, not a luxury. -
Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/03/2019 7:10 PMI walked around the city before heading home today. I admired the viaduct currently under de-construction. Can’t wait until they put pedestrian access to the waterfront!-
Jay Hindmarsh 4/04/2019 7:50 AMI was excited to learn that they will be using some of the demolished concrete to fill the decommissioned Battery Street Tunnel. Re-use, Re-cycle!

- Use the stairs instead of the elevators
- Hang dry my clothes instead of using the dryer
- Dry my hands with a personal hankercheif instead of with paper towels -
Lisa Awazu Wellman 4/03/2019 8:38 AMI am most nervous about the zero food waste challenge. But I did some research last night and doesn’t seem too challenging....
