Electricity Generation
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
#2 Wind Turbines (Onshore), #8 Solar Farms
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Smaller Portions
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Materials
Recycle Everything I Can
#55 Household Recycling
I will recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Materials
Go Paperless
#70 Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Electricity Generation
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
#30 Methane Digesters (large), #64 Methane Digesters (small)
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Food
Composting
#60 Composting, #3 Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Host a Film ScreeningWhat is the next step beyond raising awareness of women's and gender equality issues?
Kyle Williams 4/19/2019 1:22 PMTaking action! Once the majority of people are well aware, the support and understanding for action should be more clear. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Kyle Williams 4/17/2019 9:53 AMI think it's a product of how most of us were raised. Cooking a meat, starch and veggie is easy. If more people knew of options available for recipes without meat, they would probably mix them in more often. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Kyle Williams 4/17/2019 9:52 AMI've noticed I never walk the same path to and from work each day. There's always something new to see along the way.
Construction definitely inhibits my walks where sidewalks are closed down and it changes daily. Not the worst thing because it forces me to take an even more different path home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Kyle Williams 3/12/2019 11:27 AMMixing of compost and materials that will not decompose at the same rate seems like a waste. You would have to sort it all out prior to being able to use any of the compost material. Why spend all that time and effort to separate them post-facto when it's fairly easy to separate them up front and the resources can be easily available for reuse? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Kyle Williams 3/12/2019 11:23 AMMy vision of a sustainable community would probably be a smaller, more rural community that produces and reuses everything to run the town. Seems harder to accomplish in a large, urban setting without massive infrastructure. Overall the urban and sub-urban concept seems to inhibit sustainability by spreading resources over such a large land area. The smaller the footprint, the more easily a community can implement sustainable measures in my mind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
Kyle Williams 3/12/2019 11:21 AMSmaller portions, especially for dinner before you go to bed would probably help with digestion and energy. I've noticed that 20 minute window is actually real and most of the time you won't go back for 2nd's or 3rd helpings if you try this. Of course, there's always the time where you're so hungry that it doesn't change anything - but at least you know you're really that hungry! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Go PaperlessWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Kyle Williams 3/12/2019 11:18 AMThis one is also really easy to accomplish - most companies have a simple button to select that allows you to opt out of paper mail (that you would mostly throw away anyway). Living in a small apartment for the past 3 years has forced me to reduce clutter and unused stuff in my life. It's really nice not having to worry as much about taking care of your endless mounds of things that are rarely all used and focus on getting outside and enjoying your life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Recycle Everything I CanHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Kyle Williams 3/12/2019 11:16 AMReuse, Repair and Re-purpose actually to me start with your choices you make when you purchase items. I will be seeking out clothes and other household items that when used or worn out - are specifically suited to be re-purposed or repaired. Shoes are a great example, you can buy shoes that are able to be re-soled when worn out and this is a great way to reduce yearly waste. Learn how to do simple sewing and you can replace buttons, fix torn seams etc. rather than throwing out clothes that have a minor defect.-
Meghan Jones 3/12/2019 1:02 PMThanks for the ideas and inspiration!

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy CreditsYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Kyle Williams 3/12/2019 9:40 AMThis is actually really easy to accomplish, the Portland area PGE has several options for partial or full renewable energy usage that are reasonable increases in prices. My apartment building is new, but in the process of completing a LEED certification.
