Andy Hampton 4/22/2019 5:16 AMIt’s just as well I took the bus today. So far, I am the only person on this bus! School is out today for Easter Monday. I have a feeling I might have my own private bus all the way to Richmond Hill Centre! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Andy Hampton 4/16/2019 2:58 PMI had not heard of silvopasture before. It seems to have a lot of advantages - increased yield from the cows due to reduced heat stress, the ability to use the land for additional crops, such as nuts from the trees, less need for fertilizers and best of all, in my point of view, more habitat for wildlife. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Express My SupportWhat do you like most about biking in your city? What would you like to improve?
Andy Hampton 4/12/2019 2:18 PMThat it is downhill to work and uphill on the way back home! Can get a shower at home!
My route to work has a bike lane almost all the way. Admittedly it is just a line on the road, but the route is pretty quiet so I feel quite safe.
Physically separated bike lanes would obviously be better, but I realize that it would be a big infrastructure project to put them in.-

Andy Hampton 4/12/2019 2:11 PMReceived a reply back from Josh Ward, RH Sustainable Transportation Co-ordinaries. We had a good long chat and he has followed up with an email. He owns the same EV as me, so definitely a good guy. I’ll post his email in full below. There’s a link to the RH Transportation Master Plan if anyone’s interested.

Hi Andy,Thanks for the discussion this morning about cycling in Richmond Hill. As I mentioned, please have a look at Phase 1 (Network Definition) public engagement material on the City’s Transportation Master Plan page. Any comments you have pertaining to the network itself (routes, facility type) can be sent to myself and my colleague, Hubert Ng (copied). Please disregard the website’s reference for further consultation in “early” 2019, as the schedule is currently being adjusted to reflect a changed project timeline. When started, the project’s second Phase 2 will focus on programming and policies to support and complement the planned network, and will offer another opportunity for you to provide input. As a fellow Bolt owner, you may be interested to hear that consideration for electric vehicles and other new technology is within the scope of Phase 2.Please let me know if you have further questions or comments. Thanks,Josh WardSustainable Transportation CoordinatorCity of Richmond Hill905-747-6340 | c: 647-8761780-
Andy Hampton 4/19/2019 2:40 PMFurther to my conversation with Josh Ward, here’s more of our email conversation.
Hi Andy,Thank you for the comments and glad to hear the feedback; I agree with you with respect to the extension of the Mill Pond trail from Oxford to Elgin Mills. You’ll note the two alternative options presented on Oxford. There has been effort in recent years to make the trail connection through private property, and I’ve added the on-road alternative through the neighbourhood to the east as an interim solution should the trail connection prove infeasible. We will be going through a prioritization exercise within the next month, and I will ensure that this connection continues—as it has in the 4 years I’ve been here—to carry high priority.I would encourage you Andy to subscribe to the Transportation Master Plan page for updates, as you will see more opportunities to engage in the coming months. Thanks again for the input.Happy trails,Josh. From: Andy Hampton [mailto:ahampton888@gmail.com]

Subject: Re: Cycling Context in Richmond HillHi JoshThanks for the link. I took a look at the maps and it is encouraging to see so many proposed trails and bike lanes.Without being familiar with a lot of the other Richmond Hill neighbourhoods it’s hard to comment on the proposals. But I could make one comment from my own neighbourhood. I do find it very frustrating that there is currently no connectivity between the Mill Pond trail (running north/south between Regent and Oxford streets) and the Elgin Mills Greenway (running north of Elgin Mills). There seems to have been some poor planning in the past preventing those two trail systems from connecting. So some form of connecting trail at point B on the Draft Active Transportation map, at the end of Oxford Street should be a high priority as it would allow an uninterrupted trail all the way from Mill Pond to almost Gamble.RegardsAndy -

Andy Hampton 4/12/2019 5:26 AMWe should all use public transport more. It actually buys you time - like right now I’m doing this on the bus. Would be hard (and illegal!) to do when driving. When I first met Shan I decided to try and learn Chinese and nearly all of my studying was done on the bus. I learned a lot and still remember a most of it to this day.-
Andy Hampton 4/12/2019 2:05 PMGreat comments. Unfortunately Doug Ford has just cut gas taxes. John Tory is not happy as that money was earmarked for TTC refurbishments. -
Carrie Tai 4/12/2019 9:45 AMAndy, you are so right about getting more time to get caught up on things when taking public transit! I had to go downtown on Wed evening. I decided to take the bus and subway. I did have a bit of a time constraint so I ended up driving to Richmond Hill Centre. From there I took a bus to the new 407 bus terminal and then the subway down. And then I did the same route back. I knew it was going to be 1.5 hours each way, but I figured not only would it be more relaxing than driving, but I could also catch up on reading news and tweets etc. The plan was great, but unfortunately there was no wifi on the subway. :-( But it was relaxing and luckily I did have some other reading materials that I needed to review so I got that done. I never have enough time for everything so it was nice to have that time. Next time I will bring more reading materials! But I did wish that we had the subway come up to Richmond Hill. It would have made the trip much easier! If we are going to try to get public transit to be the preferred option, it needs to be more readily available. I love Sandy's idea of using the money from gas taxes and car license fees to making public transit a better, faster and cheaper option than taking a car! -
Sandy Bill 4/12/2019 8:00 AMSuch a great post. As someone who owns a car, I feel that more money from gas taxes and car licence fees should go towards making public transportation better and much cheaper I am trying to car pool with others much more now but public transportation will always be the best and we should support it with money and ridership!
