Somewhat ironically, our project yesterday involved restoring a 'novel ecosystem', an artificial wetland and lake area that once was mixed grass prairie. Given that the prairie was first plowed under long ago, one can argue that the novel ecosystem now provides a number of conservation and ecosystem services that previously - even when the prairie was present - did not exist.

The group was read an 'arbor day message' that acknowledged tree services that we now recognize as contributing to climate change mitigation.

Food production is an ecosystem service, but it can come with unitended consequences that amount to ecosystem 'disservices'. Achieving the goal of one service while being neutral or enhancing other services (such as carbon sequestration) is the ongoing challenge.
