"At the end of the challenge, I hope to have cooked some tasty vegetarian meals, walked a little each day and buy eco-friendly products. In the long run, I believe that my every day actions will become a regular routine that others can follow. "

Kadijah Spence 4/17/2019 9:17 AMWalking had been easier since the weather is warming up. Instead of using plastic or paper products, I use fabric products that can be washed. Zero waste meals are becoming easier as I do it every day. Looking for recommendations of how to eat meat on zero waste diet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?
Kadijah Spence 4/15/2019 2:29 PMWhen cooking in a rudimentary way, health issues can stem from the smoke and animal waste used as fuel for the fire. These elements can affect the lungs, mouth and nose and cause contamination of the food and areas surrounding the fire. This is not to say that you rudimentary ways of cooking are wrong, but proper sanitation methods that consider the effects on human health and the environment should be taught, learned and practiced to ensure a suitable way of life and nutritious diet. -
Kadijah Spence 4/12/2019 8:17 PMWalked instead of driving and eating a meatless meal helps me to explore different vegetables as a part if my diet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Kadijah Spence 4/03/2019 6:16 PMI walk alot because the places I need to go are close by. I take public transportation when I need to go to the city and when I am home. Living in the mid-Hudson Valley region makes it difficult to take the bus places. I have to drive to get where I need to go and sometimes it bothers me that there isn't a better and extensive bus system.-
Kadijah Spence 4/12/2019 8:24 PMLaurie, the dutchess county bus doesn't run often. But when I've had to use it, I schedule my time around the bus so I get to places on time. I do wish there was a bus to go into Kingston on a regular basis, currently there is no public bus to Kingston from Red Hook. -

Laurie Husted 4/03/2019 6:20 PMThanks Kadijah. Have you had any good experiences taking the Dutchess County Loop bus? Is it too infrequent or not go where you need to go? We put the schedule on our Drawdown Support page: https://sites.google.com/view/dutchessdrawdown/transport Would love your feedback to let others know when it can work or what improvements could be made. We're also hoping 511NYRideshare will get stronger over time as more people sign on to it. In fact, they're offering to add a widget to our transportation site - will see if we can check it out tomorrow!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Kadijah Spence 4/03/2019 6:14 PMIn America, eating meat is a sign of wealth. Meat is expensive especially red meat and can only be afforded by people who are employed. Sometimes our society places a high value on what is on our plate in connection to our health. You can be healthy and not eat meat.-
Kadijah Spence 4/12/2019 8:27 PMYes, I saw that. My only concern is that it is most likely going to be cooked on the grill with meat burgers -
