I feel a tiny bit guilty for taking a point for reducing animal products for my dinner on Monday - it was vegetarian, but a lot of milk went into the making of that super yummy strawberry shake from Burgerville. Yes, I could have ordered a salad as we rolled in after my son's baseball game at 8 pm, but a milk shake sounded like a much more satisfying meal after sitting in the rain for two hours and watching his team get shellacked. Tofu is on the menu for the entire family tonight to atone.

I was able to support four microloans through Kiva! One is going to a strawberry farmer in Moldova, one to a grocer in Ghana, one to an embroiderer in Tajikistan, and one to a beader in Palestine. All four are women.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Give a Microloan
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

    Honestly, I have no idea!

Last day of the challenge!!!  I am still thinking about electric cars and restorative agriculture.  Meatless meals have become a daily staple.  Good things coming out of this Drawdown Ecochallenge!!!

Last day!! However, I think I am going to try to keep incorporating vegan meals into my diet, because eating vegan makes me feel better overall and because I am trying to shift my diet anyway as the planet becomes less able to sustain western diets.

Due to the fact that I traveled on Earth Day and during the Eco Challenge I am going to look into offsetting my air travel. I’ve never done that before. Anyone have a recommendation of which company I should go  through?

Terrapass is the big one that does individual offsets. I also know somebody at Native Energy so I trust their projects are solid.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?

Biosequestation, increased resilience to climate change, improved topsoil, and more efficient water usage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

This challenge to use smaller plates helped me with my portion control, which had been creeping up. I used physically smaller plates for dinner, using my shallow bowls instead of full dinner plates, and found that I could load more dishes into the dishwasher. I ended up being able to hold off and add breakfast dishes before running the dishwasher. So weight loss and one more meal of dishes to reduce water, energy, and detergent use were all added benefits.

OK, so I emailed Metro to find out how to recycle bioplastics (there's nothing about them on their website). Here is what they emailed back:
Most of them are just garbage in the Portland area. City of Portland has approved the following compostable bags/liners to be put in the compost bin but it is limited specifically to this list: Biobag "Certified Compostable", EcNow Tach "Compost Me", EcoSafe "6400 Line", Glad "Compostable Kitchen" and Natur-Tec "Natur-Bag Compostable".

I buy local food a lot and wish it were easier to do.  I don't like CSAs because I get too much of what I don't need but would love a constant box with exactly what I want!

Imperfect Produce is kinda overly market-y (and there are some questions about whether the food would really have gone to waste) but they'll let you customize.
