The simple fact that while we have made some vast improvements in our country, there is still more work to do, and this is in a "first world" area. Just thinking about and now understanding that "third world" countries have much further to go in this realm shows why education overall is important, as then an issue like this comes after basic education standards are met.

I see a lot of food waste among my peers, something that truly drives me mad. This knowledge will help me to educate others before they simply throw things away. I always see it as an opportunity to feed someone else if you are not going to use/eat a food item.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

For this challenge I read parts of the book, "Farming While Black" to learn more about our food system's foundation in systemic racism and how the Soul Fire Farm in Albany, New York is returning land to Black people and Black people to the land as a tool for reparations and recovering the loss from centuries of slavery and institutionalized discrimination.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
