  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Advocate for Forest Protection
Higher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?

    Sophie Mannes's avatar
    Sophie Mannes 4/11/2019 8:06 AM
A lot of my personal choices have huge environmental impacts somewhere else that I cannot necessarily see. For example, the dyes from my uniform skirt are produced in a factory which emits pollutants and fossil fuels.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Sophie Mannes's avatar
    Sophie Mannes 4/10/2019 7:38 AM
A sustainable community, in my opinion, looks like less consumption, eating organic, supporting local companies and having little to no reliance on fossil fuels.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Sophie Mannes's avatar
    Sophie Mannes 4/10/2019 7:10 AM
I just did some research about cement alternatives - by using waste products such as fly ash to not only reduce waste but create cement that can absorb carbon dioxide. Another building material that may have a high carbon footprint is steel. It could be interesting to do more research into sustainable building materials and practices in order to ensure our buildings have a low carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?

    Sophie Mannes's avatar
    Sophie Mannes 4/10/2019 6:52 AM
Regenerative and organic agriculture not only has the potential to sequester 100% of current carbon emissions, but it can help local economies and our health. I encourage everyone to learn more about regenerative agriculture and aim to either support local organic farmers, or even grow your own food!

Today I met another student who lives in Mauritius and he wants to create a VR simulation that will allow people to see how climate change could effect the world in the future in order to empower more people to take action! So cool getting to hear his perspective and how his community has been affected.
