The Challenge offered information on new ways to help our environment.  Also, it was a good experience to learn from the experiences of colleagues and coworkers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I can definitely use fewer straws!  Need to change to paper straws!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I literally packed more people into one car instead of taking two cars for a short family outing.  Everyone wore their own seatbelt, of course. Things were a bit squished but safe, and we had some laughs, too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Choose Recycled Paper
Good job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?

Because my town has stopped recycling shredded paper, I need to do research to learn how best to use or get rid of shredded paper.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Eating smaller portions can support steadier blood sugar levels.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

A lot of our eating traditions are passed from generation to generation.  When we are open-minded, we can learn about new ways to eat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

I received a bracelet made of recycled plastic as a gift; it was purchased from a company that removes plastic from ocean waters.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

It can be frustrating to choose food or goods in non-plastic containers which can be more expensive, but spending the money is an investment in the future.
