    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

By eating smaller portions, we are reducing our potential food waste as well as reducing overeating. This amends our body’s functions and helps us feel our best.

How are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?

It all boils down to being a class struggle. Many of those who contribute to these major emissions don’t necessarily have any other option. For example, people living in huts in desolate parts of Africa have some foliage and other biomass as their only source of potential energy. Social justice plays a huge role in this, as these people are not given enough opportunity to change their ways by other people around the world with this power.

I’m so stoked by the activity of this team — whenever I see someone complete a task or post their progress, my heart warms. So far, I’ve been spreading the word about Drawdown to my community, and I’ve received some really great response! Eating low-waste and vegan-ish have also become more prevalent in my life since beginning this challenge. Let’s keep up this incredible progress!

What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

We drove down the east coast for a college visit as opposed to using air travel; once we were in the “college towns,” we utilized public transportation such as buses to explore the area and learn about the schools. It may not have been the most convenient manner in which to conduct our tours, but it was the most efficient.

In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

Meat in America overtime has developed a “luxurious” feel to it, as it once was a sort of delicacy that only the rich could afford. This stigma has stuck with the older American generations, increasing their desire to consume meat solely based on the fact that they couldn’t as a child. We have come so far, yet with further education and implementation we can make plant-based living the desirable lifestyle.

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Only one of these “dates” entails potential health detriment, so they are often misjudged! By being able to distinguish between dates that are there for stores to abide by — to sell a product by — I am able to keep for longer in my fridge because I know it is still safe to consume.
