    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Thinking about reducing, reusing and repurposing really changes the way I think before buying something in the first place.

In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

In my opinion I think one of the main reasons people eat more meat in the United States is because it is widely available for cheap. It has become apart of the cultural norm to consume in this fashion over the past 50 years and is viewed as the new normal. Recently advocacy groups have been trying to beat this stigma and show that there are other ways to sustain a healthy diet through educational documentary, books, etc. This has aided in creating a cultural revelation to switch the way Americans think about food and form a new relationship with the way we consume food. (vegan, vegetarian, local production and consumption, community gardens, etc are on the rise)

High meat consumption also has a lot to do with the meat industries strong hold on government lobbying. They do not want people to know how unsustainable meat consumption is for the planet's health and your own and actively fight against this information becoming public knowledge.

    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

Walking gives me a completely different perspective of my neighborhood: I pay attention to details that I cannot when I'm driving. I can also interact with people and pets!

In addition, even though it’s just day two, I have noticed something about composting and behavior change in general for sustainable living: it is harder to compost when you are in a rush. Since I am freezing my compost due to space limitations (and roommates), I forgot this morning to throw my eggshells and leftover avocado in the compost. I did take one egg shell out of the trash but the others were far too gone.  Behavior change requires setting aside time!

Even though it’s day two, I have noticed one thing about food waste as a student: it’s easier to have leftover food in the dining hall. There’s a lot of uncertainty with liking and disliking certain types of food served as well as portion sizes. I researched once ways to minimize food waste at a university and it was to implement a “taste test” for different stations that weren’t self-serve. Given space and infrastructure, this would a good tool for a dining hall. Below is an image of the meal I ate at the dining hall. I did self-serve most of this food and next time, I will implement “taste tests” for myself before I get significantly more. It’s all about learning!

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

I am able to better understand the difference between these dates and the proper timeline when food is still safe to eat. It has helped me reduce the amount of food waste I produce.

I believe it is a combination of availability and affordability. The high offer makes me think about how the market shapes what consumers want to buy and see as normal, without thinking about the truth behind the food products (source, health impacts, environmental impacts, etc).

I am going to carpool with classmates whenever I have classes at Eden Hall. I am going to offer rides for my roommate and neighbors I know to go to grocery store.
