  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Materials Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Throwing garbage and oil products into the sewer drainage systems- it goes directly into our bays and oceans.  Factories that  in the past have dumped chemical byproducts into our streams. Chemicals, fertilizers and bug/crabgrass killers overused on our lawns and farms, all go into our water. This affects our drinking water and the life in our bays and oceans.  I can remember the bay being as clean as glass, you were able to see the plants  growing on the bay floor and the sea creatures that lived within them, it was beautiful.  Start small, pick up garbage you see in the streets, don't put grease and oil down drains, don't over fertilize or use chemicals on your lawn.

    Food Zero-waste Cooking
How are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?

I honestly don't know much about these issues.  I do know that they say cooking over a bbq is dangerous, I believe cancer causing .
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

I believe that it was once considered that you were "well off" or "doing well" if you were able to provide meat on a daily basis for your family.  My dad was a meat and potatoes man, and we grew up that way. I no longer eat in this manner.  I believe we need to rethink our ideas and come to realize that we need to eat less meat, smaller portions of meat, and have entire days without meat.  It is a healthier diet, and less animals will need to be raised to fill the supply that is currently needed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I live close to my work, so I often try to walk back and forth at least once a day( weather permitting).  I do go home to let my dog out at lunch so if I didn't walk to work that morning I sure try to walk back after lunch!  I enjoy the walk, you get to know other people who are out walking, you get to smile and say hello and feel like part of the community you live in. I recently have refurbished my bicycle so soon I may be riding to work!

    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Restart- Everyday is a new day. What you may have not accomplished the day before recycling you can always try to do today. Before being wasteful, think out your actions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

Maybe instead of buying large quantities of unhealthy foods buy less quantity and buy quality.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Weight loss and healthier eating. You are more conscious of what your eating.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I've noticed garbage on the track when I walk the track. When I walk down to the beach I've noticed new structure going up due to storm damage from 2012. I enjoyed walking the beach in the winter, its very serene, the water is beautiful.

My motivation for doing this challenge is basically for my grandchildren.  I want a better, safer, and cleaner world for them to live in the future.  Plus it feels good to know you have some control over the environment, even if the government does not feel the same.
