While researching insulation products this morning, I came across this: "The dramatic use of plastic is only beginning to hit the public consciousness of United States citizens, where Americans go through 100 billion plastic shopping bags every year and discard 2.5 million plastic bottles each hour." 2.5 MILLION PLASTIC BOTTLES EACH...

I learned a lot from this challenge. I read up on alternative forms of green energy and agriculture, and how both can help mitigate the effects of climate change. I contacted my representatives about investing in green energy, an action that took less than five minutes and one that I will try to make a habit of in the future. I also learned how...

We have a very important water body to protect. Growing up on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, I've seen vast improvements over the years, but there's more work to be done. This and every year, I will only be using organic fertilizers in my garden and no pesticides. I'm also going to try using newspaper as a weed barrier instead of plastics or...

It's the last day! I'm almost surprised that I managed to complete all of my goals for this challenge. It helped though that I had a lot of time to do them, and most of them individually did not take that long. It doesn't take a lot of time to email a representative, or pick up some trash, or take time to read labels on food. I'm hoping I can...

I don't use straws and refuse plastic bags at the store. I know a lot of restaurants back home that are using stainless steel straws, but I have yet to see any here in the Metro Charlotte area. Reusable, washable straws for those that require a straw seems like a small thing but I believe taking steps to eliminating single-use plastics will go...

The fact that my generation may see the end of humanity in our lifetime. Millennials are nihilistic and sardonic partly because we don't see the people we elected doing their jobs to make our world a more habitable place, and in many cases, it seems our politicians are actively trying to make the world worse off for people.

Happy earth day!  Such a beautiful day it was...I only wish I could spend more time outside!  Days like this I wish we had operable windows in the office...

Okay, so I didn't do an online energy audit but I did schedule an actual energy audit and I'm really looking forward to following the auditor around my house and asking him 1000 questions.

After many years of walking to the Southside marketplace for coffee, lunch and errands, I'm still blown away by how anyone thought that suburban, pedestrian-ignoring design was a good idea in the heart of an urban neighborhood. On the other hand, I'm glad the Anthem projects included upgraded hardscape materials and outdoor patios that improve...

you have to start by trying and trying comes from caring.  hearing and seeing the impact negative actions take on our communities can feel overwhelming; how can one person really make a difference if no one else does.  however, knowing that there are others out there that do can and together we can make a difference keeps me hopeful.
