    Materials Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

My plastic consumption usually consists of:
    • To-go juices (Naked juice, in particular)
    • Coffee cup lids
    • Straws
    • Food packaging
    • Plastic bags for the shared bathroom trash bin
    I can substitute these with:
    • Juice from home in my own to-go container
    • Coffee from home in my own coffee container
    • The metal straw I have sitting in my drawer. :(
    • "Naked" foods (like bread from the bakery, unpackaged fruits, etc.)
    • An old pillow case that I can reuse
I need to get into the habit of pre-making coffee, drinking more water (instead of juice), carrying my metal straw with me every day, and finding an old pillow case to use for the bathroom trash can.

I'm mostly focusing on reducing my plastic consumption. For about a week to a week and a half, I was virtually plastic free (in terms of buying and using). I caved one day when I needed an energy boost during a late night and bought a Naked juice drink. That caused a bit of a snowball effect...So I'm starting fresh today (Wed, April 17)!

Electricity Generation Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? Were you surprised by the information you found?

I was surprised that tidal energy isn't used more! There are definite drawbacks, but those seem to be similar to the drawbacks of wind turbines, with the exception of being underwater. Half of the possible negative effects have not been researched enough for them to  convince me that using more tidal power would be an absolutely bad idea.

    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I feel more connected to my neighbors and my community when I am walking and biking. Today, I biked with my best friend to the nearby (1.5 miles) coffee house. We got to take in the beautiful greenery we are surrounded by.

Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

Having the pedestrian sidewalk merge with the bike lane in a city where everyone travels by bike is not helpful for pedestrians! When I was walking, I was worried about being in the way of the bikes. When I was biking, I was worried about choosing to be on the sidewalk with pedestrians or in the street with the (admittedly very few) cars.

Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?

Healthier environment- more resilient ecosystems and farming systems, Reducing food waste with composting, Carbon sequestering, Active work against Agribusiness, Better soil, Less fossil fuels burned. Preserve traditional knowledge of the land and of crops.

    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Amanda Burns's avatar
    Amanda Burns 4/04/2019 10:40 AM
Yes! From Drawdown. It seems like the biggest advantages of silvopasture are 1) being able to keep the  landscape similar to how it was, with trees and native plants- biodiversity (as opposed to clear-cutting the area to create pasture) and 2) being able to use existing (or planted) trees to sequester carbon from the atmosphere! (which is not as significant on pastureland with grasses). It also seems like it is nice for the cattle and other livestock because they are shaded and have more protection against the elements. ((It also creates a more closed-loop system where the livestock eat the grass, fertilize the soil, and create better soil for the trees and plants to grow))

Buildings and Cities Go by Bike
How does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?

I biked to the grocery store and back today. While the ride itself was enjoyable, I forwent buying eggs as I was not confident I'd be able to make it back to my apartment with them intact. I also think I will have to go shopping again sooner, as I can only carry so much in my backpack.
