  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Buy Bamboo
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

I am really happy with the bamboo alternative readily available in my community. However, they have to be sought after at more high-end stores and I wish they were a little more prevalent and desired.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

    Cordelia Hume 4/24/2019 1:56 PM
I am most motivated by the amount of water and land use that is wasted for uneaten food. It is just so sad that people do not realize the consequences of food waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

It is very important to me that I support local farmers. Without them, most people would have to get their food shipped from various places, resulting in increased carbon emissions. In addition, locally-sourced food is typically more fresh and healthy!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Eating smaller portions not only benefits the environment, but can also improve your health! This can prevent overeating.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Ember Penney's avatar
    Ember Penney 4/23/2019 6:42 PM
Knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates motivates me to save as much food as I can. I wish I had known sooner that most food that gets thrown away is actually still good to eat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Ember Penney's avatar
    Ember Penney 4/23/2019 6:40 PM
I had not heard of the term silvopasture before now. I think the biggest advantage of silvopasture is the effective use of land, providing both forests and grazing land.

All of this waste make me angry, especially the hours of labor put into producing the food. Thinking about the hard work people put into growing my food motivates me to be wise about expiration dates and always compost!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

In addition to recycling, I can refuse plastic straws at restaurants. I can also reuse my water bottle, coffee mug, and buy a reusable metal straw. Additionally, I can repurpose glass jars into pots and reuse my school supplies from previous years.

Happy Earth Day! Sustainability Club did a trash dump at Woods Charter School today during high school lunch! We dumped the Recycling, COmpost, and Trash bins onto different tarps and sorted them in front of peers to demonstrate the items not being properly sorted. It was fun! Keep composting and encouraging others to too, as well as being mindful about purchases (vote with your dollar!).

What I found most impactful about this was the fact that the trash pile started as the largest but compost ended up being the largest after sorting. Definitely a good way to reach out to the Woods community! Go Green Team!!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

I believe it's the perspective. In the United States and  Mexico it's thought that meat fills the plate. That it's what gives you the strength to build muscle. Meat is found in the majority of fast food restaurants and plays a huge role in the main dishes in Mexico. While yes, in Mexico they have their Mexican rice and black beans. It's not viewed as the main dish but rather the sides of your meal. This is unless you get gorditas with black beans and cheese. Regardless, it's hard being vegetarian in Mexico, especially vegan when there are so many problems with whether the vegetables have been irrigated with clean water.  As for the United States, meat is just tastier and more heavily advertised in commercials.
